La cascade de Faillitoux
Découvrez l'une des plus jolies cascades du département! Située à 1010m d'altitude la cascade de Faillitoux vous offre une impressionnante chute d'eau. Elle franchit une coulée de lave qui a formée des orgues basaltiques au pied de la cascade.
La cascade de Faillitoux entaille une épaisse coulée de lave basaltique prismée emplissant une vallée suspendue au-dessus de la Cère. L’âge de la coulée est de 9,5 Ma. Les prismes de la coulée basaltique s'élèvent sur toute la hauteur de la falaise et s'infléchissent vers le haut de celle-ci.
La roche de la coulée prismée est un basalte riche en phénocristaux d'augite (pyroxène noir) et d'olivine. Les cristaux d'augite sont très abondants et peuvent atteindre de 1 à 2 centimètres. La matrice de la lave contient des microlites d'augite, d'olivine, de plagioclases et des traces de magnétite et de biotite.

The waterfall of Faillitoux
Discover one of the most beautiful waterfalls of the department! Located at 1010m of altitude the waterfall of Faillitoux offers you an impressive waterfall. It crosses a lava flow which formed basaltic organs at the foot of the waterfall.
The Faillitoux waterfall cuts through a thick, prismatic basaltic lava flow filling a valley suspended above the Cère River. The age of the flow is 9.5 Ma. The prisms of the basaltic flow rise to the full height of the cliff and bend upwards.
The rock of the prismatic flow is a basalt rich in augite (black pyroxene) and olivine phenocrysts. The augite crystals are very abundant and can reach 1 to 2 centimeters. The lava matrix contains microlites of augite, olivine, plagioclase and traces of magnetite and biotite.
