O primeiro cemitério foi o da Igreja do Bonfim, construído pela Irmandade do santíssimo Sacramento e entregue à prefeitura em 7 de outubro de 1834. Por volta de 1851, começou a procura por um outro local para a construção do cemitério extramuros. Além das trincheiras situadas onde hoje é um canalete, nos fundos do quartel do exército, as irmandades ficaram encarregadas de construir paredes de catacumbas.
Em 1855, quando houve uma grande epidemia de cólera, o novo cemitério começou a ser utilizado para o enterro das vítimas. O primeiro sepultamento foi o da índia Marcelina, de 25 anos, em 12 de dezembro. Naquele dia também foram enterrados mais 11 vítimas do cólera, em sua maioria escravos.
Em 1861 o novo cemitério estava pronto, e em 24 de outubro de 1863 foi entregue à Santa Casa. A capela de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, construída em 29 de outubro de 1899, ela recebeu a doação de um altar montado na praça principal, atual Xavier Ferreira. Em 1870, o altar foi desmantelado após a missa em memória dos falecidos na guerra do Paraguai.
Existe um túmulo próximo a entrada, onde encontram-se os restos mortais de uma família estrangeira. A parte superior desta, fora esculpida em ferro fundido, existindo apenas duas unidades no mundo: a do cemitério católico e uma outra na França.
Também encontramos o monumento do obreiro desconhecido, localizado na praça do Bonfim, sendo ali o primeiro cemitério da cidade.
Este monumento, único no Brasil quiçá no mundo, onde encontra sepultado o trabalhador desconhecido, cuja cruz que encontra-se neste monumento era do pórtico de antigo cemitério.

The first cemetery was the Igreja do Bonfim, built by the Brotherhood of the Holy Sacrament and handed over to the city hall on October 7, 1834. Around 1851, the search for another location for the construction of the extramural cemetery began. In addition to the trenches located in what is now a gutter, at the back of the army barracks, the brotherhoods were in charge of building walls of catacombs.
In 1855, when there was a great cholera epidemic, the new cemetery began to be used for the burial of victims. The first burial was that of 25-year-old India, Marcelina, on December 12th. That day, 11 more victims of cholera, mostly slaves, were also buried.
In 1861 the new cemetery was completed, and on October 24, 1863 it was handed over to Santa Casa. The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, built on October 29, 1899, received the donation of an altar set up in the main square, now Xavier Ferreira. In 1870, the altar was dismantled after the mass in memory of the deceased in the Paraguayan War.
There is a tomb near the entrance, where the remains of a foreign family are found. The upper part of this, was carved in cast iron, existing only two units in the world: the Catholic cemetery and another in France.
We also find the monument of the unknown worker, located in Bonfim square, which is the first cemetery in the city.
This monument, unique in Brazil perhaps in the world, where the unknown worker is buried, whose cross that is in this monument was from the portico of an old cemetery.
