Simbol al stațiunii, epava de la Costinești are o poveste foarte interesantă...
Nava,construită la șantierele navale din Belfast la fel ca și Titanicul, a fost lansată la apă in anul 1942 sub numele de „Empire Strength“, schimbându-și-l ulterior in „Saxon Star“, „Redbrook“ şi, într-un final, „Evangelia“.
În dimineaţa zilei de 15 octombrie 1968, aceasta a eșuat la circa 1,5 km de plaja nordică a stațiunii Costinești.
Cu aproximativ 12 ore înainte, echipajul de pe Evangelia ceruse ajutor prin radio (SOS) prin care sesiza că se află în dificultate. Conform coordonatelor transmise, nava se afla între Gura Portiței și Brațul Sfântu Gheorghe, dar acolo nava nu a fost de găsit.
După un nou contact radio, grecii au transmis salvatorului alte coordonate, indicând o poziție undeva între Gura Portiței și Vadu. După alte căutări, nici în a doua locație nu a fost găsită vreo navă.
Evangelia a fost apoi localizată în dreptul stațiuni Costinești, la momentul respectiv un mic sat pescăresc.
Nava era eșuată departe de traseul de navigație,pe un petec de nisip, singurul din întreaga zonă.
Conform declarațiilor date de catre echipajele navelor de salvare, Evangelia ar fi fost eșuată de catre comandant la ordinul proprietarului, armatorului grec Aristotel Onassis, pentru a putea încasa prima de asigurare.Consultându-se cu autoritatile române, asiguratorul a refuzat plata asigurării.
Întrucât echipajul a abandonat nava, potrivit regulilor internaționale ambarcațiunea a devenit proprietatea Statului Român.
Cutia se află într-o locație potrivită pentru a face o poză frumoasă cu Evanghelia.

Symbol of the resort, the wreck from Costinesti has a very interesting story...
The ship, built at the Belfast shipyards like the Titanic, was launched in 1942 under the name "Empire Strength", later changing it to "Saxon Star", "Redbrook" and, finally, "Evanghelia".
On the morning of October 15, 1968, it failed about 1.5 km from the northern beach of Costinesti resort.
About 12 hours earlier, Evanghelia crew had called for help by radio (SOS) to report that they were in distress. According to the transmitted coordinates, the ship was between Gura Portiței and Brațul Sfântu Gheorghe, but the ship could not be found there.
After a new radio contact, the Greeks sent other coordinates to the rescuer, indicating a position somewhere between Gura Portiței and Vadu. After other searches, no ship was found in the place indicated second time.
Evanghelia was then located near the resorts of Costinesti, at that time a small fishing village.
The ship had failed far from the navigation route, on a patch of sand, the only one in the whole area. According to the statements given by the crews of the rescue ships, Evanghelia was failed by the commander at the order of the owner, the Greek shipowner Aristotel Onassis, in order to collect the insurance premium. In consultation with the Romanian authorities, the insurer refused to pay the insurance.
As the crew abandoned the ship, according to international rules, the boat became the property of the Romanian State.
