Houve, em tempos, uma Beatriz de Portugal, mãe de D. Manuel I. Aqui fica uma pequena biografia desta grande senhora:
Beatriz de Portugal, nasceu no dia 13 de Junho de 1429. Era filha do infante João, Condestável de Portugal (filho de João I e de Filipa de Lencastre) e de Isabel de Barcelos (filha do Duque de Bragança dom Afonso I e de Beatriz de Alvim). Era bisneta de dom Pedro I e neta de Nuno Álvares Pereira.
Casou em 1447 com o seu primo direito, o Infante Fernando, Duque de Beja e de Viseu, irmão do rei Afonso V, de quem teve vários filhos, nomeadamente o rei Manuel I e a rainha Leonor. Para além disto, era tia de Isabel, a Católica uma vez que a sua irmã Isabel havia casado com João II de Castela, de quem também era prima, uma vez que todos eles eram netos de João de Gante. Era também prima do imperador Maximiliano I, Carlos da Borgonha, uma vez que descendiam do rei Dom João I que era seu avô.
Teve um papel activo na política dos reinados de Dom Afonso V, Dom João II e Dom Manuel I. Ajudou a concretizar as pazes com Castela encontrando-se pessoalmente com Isabel, a Católica, na vila de Alcântara em 1479. Este acontecimento conduziu à assinatura do Tratado de Alcáçovas e Terçarias de Moura, em Setembro desse ano. Com a paz entre Portugal e Castela, ficou a duquesa responsável por cuidar do neto Afonso e da sobrinha-neta Isabel de Aragão, ficando a viver em Moura.
Os primos estavam destinados a casar. Por outro lado, o seu filho Manuel foi para a corte de Castela.
Foi também preponderante na gestão da Ordem de Santiago actuando como tutora do seu filho D. Diogo. Nesta qualidade, também foi nomeada pelo Papa como governadora da Ordem de Cristo, tendo sido a única mulher a desempenhar este cargo.
Após a morte do filho D. Diogo às mãos do rei D. João II de Portugal que escreveu à sogra a explicar o sucedido. Beatriz aceitou o acontecimento, escrevendo aos alcaides dos seus castelos que os entregassem ao rei, seu genro.
Por sua conta e risco, enviou caravelas em direção a Ocidente, contrariando a política expansionista de Afonso V de Portugal (interessado em conquistar o reino de Fez, no norte de África), caravelas essas que descobriram, vinte anos antes de Cristovão Colombo, as Antilhas e parte do Continente americano, nomeadamente a Terra Nova.
Fundou em Beja o convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, actual Museu Rainha Dona Leonor, também conhecido como Museu Regional de Beja e onde viveu Mariana Alcoforado que escreveu As Cartas Portuguesas. É lá que se encontra sepultada junto do marido.
Beatriz morreu aos 76 anos, no dia 30 de Setembro de 1506

Beatriz de Portugal, was born on June 13, 1429. She was the daughter of infant João, Constestável de Portugal (son of João I and Filipa de Lencastre) and Isabel de Barcelos (daughter of Duque de Bragança dom Afonso I and Beatriz Alvim). She was the great-granddaughter of Dom Pedro I and the granddaughter of Nuno Álvares Pereira.
In 1447, she married her right cousin, Infante Fernando, Duque de Beja and Viseu, brother of King Afonso V, of whom she had several children, namely King Manuel I and Queen Leonor. After the death of her son D. Diogo at the hands of King D. João II of Portugal, she wrote to her mother-in-law to explain what happened. Beatriz accepted the event, writing to the mayors of their castles to hand them over to the king, their son-in-law.
At his own risk, he sent caravels towards the West, contrary to the expansionist policy of Afonso V of Portugal (interested in conquering the kingdom of Fez, in North Africa), which caravels discovered, twenty years before Cristovão Colombo, Antilles and part of the American continent, namely Newfoundland.
She founded the convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Beja, currently the Rainha Dona Leonor Museum, also known as the Regional Museum of Beja and where Mariana Alcoforado lived, who wrote The Portuguese Letters. It is there that she is buried with her husband.
Beatriz died at the age of 76, on September 30, 1506
