One adventure that Plakias visitors should not miss is a hike into the beautiful Kotsifou Gorge (Φαράγγι κοτσιφού).
The gorge is located west of the mountain Kouropa and one of the two main connections of the Plakias Bay with the north coast.
The small stream in the Gorge is called "Kotsifou" (greek name for "Blackbird"). While it can carry a mssive load of water in winter, the upper part of the stream dries out in summer but there is a spring half way down the gorge that provides some water even in the hottest summer.
The earliest mills along the river to grind grain were probably built during venetian times (1204-1669). Farmers came even from Gavdos to use the mills. In the last 100-200 years the local farmers switched to Olive Olive farming and the mills had been abandoned. The remains of four mills can still be spotted. Two of them have recently been partly reconstructed - my guess is that we will soon see a tavern there (but I hope not).
To arrive to the cache it is recommended to leave your car in Plakias and walk along the stream. There are paths on both sides - the more picturesque eastern path starts right in front of the Youth Hostel and you need to cross the stream just a bit after the first mill. The other one on the west side is a bit easier to walk.
Coming from Plakias you will first pass a few remains of the "Mill of Alimbanis". After another 15 minutes you will arrive at the "Mill of Chatzis" where you can cross the river again on an old stone bridge. Before stepping over the bridge I recommend a short visit at the chapel "Agios Stavromenos" which is just a few steps further upstream.
There are still many outside walls of the buildings standing while all roofs are collapsed. The buildings are safe to enter - just watch your steps.
A little ditch was transporting the water to the big tower in the center of the mill which is the most impressive part of the mill visible from far. The water dropped several meters down inside the tower to move a wheel at the bottom.
From this place the water ran again into another channel which splits and feeds another two lower and less visible towers. So we find actually three mills in one place.
There is a small footpath just next of the tower bringing you to the upper ditch where the water came into the mill with the option to get to the top of the tower. Be careful when it's windy but walking in the ditch makes the access quite safe The path follows a few meters the old water channel and winds finally uphill to the village of Mirthios with it's highly recommended tavernas, which you will reach after about 20 - 30 minutes.
A big adventure is to go back to the bridge and take off the shoes to continue hiking IN the small river. It's big fun wading in the cold water on a hot summer day. A bit of climbing over rocks is necessary but you will be rewarded with a unique nature experience and pass the two reconstructed mills (Mill of Papas and Mill of Zembekis). On the way you got the opportunity to log two more caches (the earthcache "Kotsifou Gorge" and the traditional cache "The Magic Bridge"). Calculate 2-3 hours for the riverwalk (including several stops to enjoy nature or for a dip in the river).
The cache itself is a small container which is big enough to keep some trackables.
Ein Abenteuer, welches Plakiasbesucher sich nicht entgehen lassen sollten ist eine Wanderung in die wunderschöne Kotsifouschlucht (Φαράγγι κοτσιφού). Sie liegt westlich des Kouropa Gebirgszugs und ist eine der beiden Hauptverbindunsadern zum Norden der Insel.
Der kleine Bach in der Schlucht wird Kotsifou (griech. für "Amsel") genannt. Im Winter kann der Bach nach Regenfällen stark anschwellen wohingegen der oebere Abschnitt im Sommer völlig austrocknet. Eine Quelle auf halber Höhe sorgt aber für stetigen Wasserfluss im unteren Teil der Schlucht.
Die ersten Mühlen entlang des Kotsifous gehen vermutlich in die Zeit der Venezianer (1204-1669) zurück. Bauern kamen sogar auf Booten von Gavdos um hier ihr Getreide mahlen zu lassen. Vor etwa 100-200 Jahren wich der Getreideanbau den Olivenbäumen, die heute das Landschaftsbild prägen und die Mühlen verfielen.
Vier Mühlenanlagen kann man heute noch sehen. Die beiden obersten wurden in den letzten Jahren wieder rekonstruiert - vermutlich um sie in eine Taverne zu integrieren (schade darum).
Das Auto pakst Du am besten in Plakias und wanderst dann am Bach entlang. Auf beiden Seiten des Bachs gibt es Wege. Der östliche beginnt am Youth Hostel - wobei Du nach einiger Zeit dann den Bach queren musst kurz nach der ersten Mühle in dem Tal. Der westliche ist etwas einfacher zu laufen.
Von Plakias kommend passierst Du zunächst die Überreste der "Mühle des Alimbanis". Nach weiteren 15 Minuten kommst Du dann zur "Mühle von Chatzis" wo eine Brücke Dich trockenen Fusses auf die andere Seite bringt. Vor dem Überqueren der Brücke lohnt sich vielleicht noch ein kleiner Abstecher zur Kapelle "Agios Stavromenos", die nur wenige Schritte flussaufwärts liegt.
Von der Mühle sind noch die Aussenmauern etlicher Gebäude erhalten.
Ein kleiner Wassergraben führte das Wasser zum oberen Turm, den Teil der Mühle, den man schon von weitem sieht. Dort stürzte das Wasser senkrecht nach unten und drehte ein Schaufelrad am Boden des Turms. Von dort gelangte das Wasser über ein sich teilenden kurzen Graben zu zwei weiteren Falltürmen, die kleiner und weniger offensichtlich zu sehen sind. Es gibt innerhalb dieser Mühlenanlage also insgesamt sogar 3 Mühlen.
Ein schmaler Fußweg rechts vom Turm führt Dich nach oben zum Wasserzulauf der Mühle. Man kann auch auf den Turm hinaus - aber sei bei starkem Wind vorsichtig. Wenn Du den Weg bergaufwärts weitergehst, kommst Du nach 20-30 Minuten nach Mirthios, wo gleich mehrere sehr empfehlenswerte Tavernen sich über Deinen Besuch freuen.
Ein grösseres Abenteuer ist es jedoch wieder zum Bach hinunterzusteigen und dann im Wasser watend in die Schlucht weiterzuwandern. Im kalten Wasser mit eingen Klettereinlagen ist das ein Riesenspaß. Man kommt dabei auch an den rekonstruuierten Mühlen (Mühle des Papas und Mühle des Zembekis) vorbei und passiert eine uralte Steinbrücke mit herrlichem Badepools drumherum. Zwei weitere Geocaches, nämlich der Earthcache "Kotsifou Gorge" und der Tradi "The Magic Bridge" warten auf dem Weg ebenfalls auf Dich. Bis zur Quelle wo es einen guten Fussweg aus dem Bach hinaus Richtung Mirthios gibt solltest Du mit etlichen Badestopps etwa 2-3 Stunden Zeit einplanen.
Der Cache ist ein kleiner Container - gerade groß genug für den einen oder anderen Trackable.
