Geocache Description:

This cache is located close to Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park which was established in 2018.  The 332 acre park encompasses 220 acres of badlands-fragile, but ruggedly spectactular geologic formations adjacent to the 17,290 acre Smoky  Valley Ranch.  Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park showcases a mile-long stretch of 100 foot tall spires and cliffs of eroded Niobrara Chalk, a layer of rock deposited about 85 million years ago.  The park is the largest expanse of exposed Niobrara Chalk formations in Kansas.  Smaller Chalk outcrops are  commonly seen along US Hwy 83 between Oakley and Historic Lake Scott State Park.  Monument Rocks is a well-known Niobrara Chalk landmark southeast of Little Jerusalem a few miles.

The chalk formations are easily damaged by weather and by climbing and walking on them.  Enjoy the landscape but leave no trace behind of your time in the park.  Stay on marked trails, walkways and overlooks.  Only guided tours are allowed off-trail.  Pedestrian traffic only except for wheelchairs.  Take nothing but pictures.  Fossil hunting and collecting anything are not allowed.  No rock climbing, camping or fires.  Dogs must be on a leash and you must clean up after their messes.  This is a day use park only...open sunrise to sunset year round.

The cache is actually NOT located on park grounds but I encourage you to take in the park while you are here.  There will be a daily or annual park permit needed in order to park your car in the actual parking lot and to hike the park.  However you can park on the north/south road leading into the park and not need a permit.  Just don't drive west into the parking area.  You are looking for a small container, easily visible nearby.  This cache is located on land owned by a friend who has requested me to put a cache here.

I truly hope you take the time to enjoy the Badlands park and relax a while to enjoy the sights and sounds of the area.  Hopefully you will come on a day when the wind isn't trying to blow the Chalk formations over!  Watch out for snakes, lizards, cactus, yucca, cow patties or anything else that is common to the area.  I haven't seen any animals but buffalo in the distance and birds flying overhead.   But the rock formations are awesome so it's worth the hike.

BYOP and happy caching.
