As Joaninhas são vorazes e sofisticadas máquinas de guerra e um importante aliado no combate a algumas pragas das nossas hortas e jardins. Com as suas mandibulas farpadas, desfazem as suas vítimas, que podem ser Pulgões, afídeos, moscas da fruta, piolhos da folha, entre outros insetos e apenas um indivíduo, ao longo da sua vida, pode devorar até 5000 pulgões!
As Joaninhas são igualmente protegidas contra a maioria dos seus inimigos. A sua carapaça vermelha e negra é em rigor, um aviso contra os predadores, pois quando ameaçadas elas segregam um veneno pelas articulações das patas e assim eles aprendem a interpretar as suas cores como um aviso para se manterem à distância.
É talvez o inseto mais conhecido de todos os auxiliares de uma horta biológica, não é só na fase adulta que a Joaninha tem estes hábitos predadores, mesmo na fase de larva, ela é bastante ativa e esfomeada!
