Uhthoff Trail Cache Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

TrimblesTrek: I've decided to permanently archive this cache for a number of reasons:
- I've been unable to get to the location to retrieve the broken cache and replace it. (I WILL retrieve the cache at some point this summer. With the passing of a relative, I simply don't get to the area much anymore.)
- It's a 5km round trip walk (or ride) along a basically flat and uninteresting section of rail trail. No real compelling reason to visit the site. (Although the "bird-nest-of-2004" was pretty neat.

Thanks to all that visited!

Geocache Description:

Uhthoff Trail Cache

Hidden along the Uhthoff Trail outside Orillia.
7" x 5" x 4" tupperware with a turquoise lid.

The cache is located about 2.5km from the trail access point at N44 39.203 W79 26.070 on Division Rd. Other access points may be found.

Part of the Trans Canada Trail, the Uhthoff Trail goes west out of Orillia, Ontario and will take the traveler all the way to Coldwater, Ontario on the edge of Matchedash Bay. The trail is fine for walkers or cyclists and is "paved" with fine crusher run aggregate or "screenings".

The road bed follows an abandoned CP railway line which was built about 1920 to move limestone east and south through Orillia and take grain to the great lakes accessible towns of Victoria Harbour and Waubashene. The way is smooth and any grades along the way are slight and should be no problem for the least motivated cyclist.

There are several points of interest along the way and creeks and rivers going under the road bed make for happy breaks and an opportunity to see all sorts of creatures.

The unusual name of the trail is from the surname of one of the German bankers who arranged financing for the venture when the rail line was built. The quarry and geographic area have the name attached to them still.

The Orillia Naturalists Club and the Orillia Snowmobile Club cooperate in bringing the public this string of pearls.
