The coordinates for this cache take you to a monument, which was erected in 1920 to commemorate the first permanent structure built by white men in the Mississippi Valley. Sieur de La Salle was the French explorer who built the fort in 1680 while staying in the area for a short time. There is still a controversy over where exactly on the bluff the fort was built … it didn’t last very long and wasn’t well documented. This cache will give you an opportunity to maybe walk in the footsteps of this famous explorer.
From this fort, he traveled many miles to another more famous French fort. The monument lists the distance traveled. To locate the final cache, complete the following calculations:
Divide 1234.5 by the distance, to find the decimal portion of the minutes for the latitude … add to N40° 38.xxx’
Divide 784.5 by the distance, to find the decimal portion of the minutes for the longitude … add to W089° 36.xxx’
Let’s see if there are any other instructions. Oh yes, the cache container is one of those 50 cal ammo boxes, so one shouldn’t need a hint to find something that big. You can/should stay on trails until the last 150 feet or so. Yes, the title is really a clue to get you started … with just a dash of humor. Enjoy!
