A chapel or hermitage is a secondary Christian temple. They are usually places for the religious attendance of specific groups of people or religious communities. Chapels in villages, colleges, universities, prisons, convents, barracks, castles, farms, etc. are common. The term hermitage is usually used for chapels erected in isolated places.

In the religious hierarchy there are cathedrals, churches and chapels. Cathedrals are the principal churches of dioceses where the bishop celebrates the Sunday Eucharist. The churches are the main temples of the parishes, one of them being called the mother church where the priest celebrates the main Sunday mass. The remaining small churches are called chapels where there is usually no daily or Sunday religious service, or only on the occasion of festivities.

Located in the village of Martinzes, parish of Amêndoa, municipality of Mação, has as its patron Saint Anthony.
