O nome original da praia era Calheta, que quer dizer "entrança de mar" em forma de calha. Com o tempo, se tornou Galheta, que em vez disso significa pequeno vaso ou jarra usada em celebrações eucarísticas e nada tem a ver com a praia, mas se tornou o nome mais usado.
É acessível somente por trilhas, de baixo grau de dificuldade, que iniciam na Praia Mole - da qual é separada por um costão de rochas - ou no canal da Barra da Lagoa, a 15 quilômetros do Centro de Florianópolis.
