Quando viemos pela primeira vez à ilha do Faial, em 2004, explorámos profundamente a ilha. Ficamos instantaneamente maravilhados com sua beleza e atmosfera. Numa das nossas viagens descobrimos o Porto do Salão. No momento em que estávamos lá, alguns pescadores locais voltaram de uma pescaria noturna e puxaram os seus barcos para as rochas. Nunca tínhamos visto algo assim antes, porque de onde viemos não existem rochas, nem penhascos, nem portos naturais. Ficamos intrigados com esses pequenos portos entre as rochas onde você tinha que puxar o seu barco para fora da água, porque do contrário as ondas o levariam embora. A cena nos lembrou de um filme que recentemente vimos. “O Velho e o Mar, segundo um livro de Ernest Hemingway, sobre um pescador Cubano. Por muitos anos esquecemos dessa cena até que recentemente assisti a este filme novamente e, agora morando nesta bela ilha, decidi colocar um geocache neste local, dedicado aos pescadores locais e ao grande filme.
Junto a este pequeno porto, que agora é usado principalmente no verão para nadar e tomar sol e durante todo o ano para os pescadores sentados nas rochas com suas varas de pesca, você encontrará um parque de campismo, banheiros e churrasqueiras para usar à vontade.
THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA
When we first came to the island of Faial in 2004 we explored the island thouroughly. We were instantly blown away buy its beauty and atmosphere.
On one of our trips we discovered the Porto do Salão. At the moment we were there, some local fishermen came home from a night fishing and pulled their boats ashore. We had never seen something like that before as where we come from, there are no rocks, no cliffs no natural harbours. We became intrigued by these small harbours between the rocks where you had to pull your boat out of the water because if you didn´t, the waves would take it away.
The scene reminded us of a movie we just watched. “The Old Man and the Sea, after a book by Ernest Hemingway, about a Cuban fisherman.
For many years we forgot about this scene until I recently watched this film again and, now living on this beautiful island, decided to place a geocache in this location, dedicated to the local fishermen and to the great movie.
Next to this little harbour, which is now mainly used in summer for swimming and sunbathing and throughout the year by fishermen sitting on the rocks with their fishing rods, you will find a camping ground, toilets and barbeques to use freely.
