Unfortunately, a gate has been placed about 2KM from the top of the access road, and a hike up, or mountain bike ride is now required. In addition, the gate at the bottom MAY be locked on weekdays. They are still trying to sort things out here... people have been dumping garbage on the mountain.
You likely haven't been here before, so I should point out that a truck or SUV is recommended if you want to drive to the top, depending on seasonal conditions. Personally, I use a SUZUKI Sidekick, with 4 low engaged, just so it doesn't take as long. I would discourage you from taking a new 'car', but I have driven up in many not as new ones, including a Toyota Corolla. There are no cross ditches, it's just gravel.
You could also ATV/motocross your way up, or use a mountain bike (which is popular). Also, there are hiking trails, and you could work your way up from the Matsqui area, and pass by a 'lost lake'.
You will encounter snow during the winter, and I will post a note describing conditions as it draws nearer. I have snowshoed in this area.

In case you need directions to the gravel road that goes up Sumas Mountain, get onto McKee from McMillan, then once at the end of McKee, go North on (Upper) Sumas Mtn Rd, then turn right on Batt. Near the end of Batt, you will take a right turn onto gravel. There is a (first) gate about 2 switchbacks just off of Batt which closes nightly at 9PM. (And may be closed during the weekdays as well...)
