Big Pond Traditional Geocache

The cache is in a location overlooking Frensham Great Pond which is situated in Frensham Common, an area of approximately 1000 acres of attractive countryside, midway between Farnham and Hindhead.

Frensham Common can be reached on the A287 south from Farnham. The common is very popular with visitors and the car park is open from 9-00am till 9-00pm, but after these hours a slightly longer walk from the entrance of the car park will take you to the cache. Please keep to the footpaths because this is a site of Special Scientific Interest with birds nesting in the heather.

Frensham Common comprises a large area of heathland, with some coniferous and mixed woodland, and two large ponds, known as Frensham Great Pond and Frensham Little Pond.

The ponds were built in the Middle Ages to provide fish for the Bishop of Winchester's estate (still used by anglers) and provide a home for waterfowl and other wildlife.

There are safe sandy beaches beside the Great Pond, making it an ideal location for a family day out. There are many miles of footpaths and bridleways on which to explore the Common. Angling and sailing are restricted to members of the relevant clubs. The common supports a wealth of wildlife. Species found on the heath include sand lizard, smooth snake, woodlark, Dartford Warbler and Nightjar. The ponds also attract rare visitors such as the osprey, especially during spring and autumn.

The cache has been placed an easy walk from the car park in a location, which should give you a good view over the Great Pond.
