"One Hundred and One Dalmatians is a 1961 American comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and based on the 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. Directed by Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske and Wolfgang Reitherman, it was the 17th feature film. The film tells the story of a litter of Dalmatian puppies who are kidnapped by villainous Cruella de Vil ("deVille"), who wants to use her fur to make coats. Her parents, Pongo and Perdita, started saving their children from Cruella, in the process rescuing 84 additional puppies that were bought in pet stores, bringing the total number of Dalmatians to 101.
The film was originally released in theaters on January 25, 1961, and was a box office success, taking the studio out of the financial crisis caused by Sleeping Beauty, a more expensive production launched two years earlier. In addition to its box office revenue, its commercial success was due to the use of cheap animation techniques - such as the use of xerography during the dyeing and painting process of traditional animation cells - that kept production costs low. Later, Disney would release a live-action adaptation called 101 Dalmatians in 1996 and its sequel, 102 Dalmatians in 2000. Straight into the animated sequence of the 1961 film 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure was released in 2003.
