What is FOLIATION?

Foliation in geology refers to repetitive layering in metamorphic rocks. Each layer can be as thin as a sheet of paper, or over a meter in thickness. The word comes from the Latin folium, meaning "leaf", and refers to the sheet-like planar structure - see the image below.

How is FOLIATION formed?

Foliation is caused by the re-alignment of minerals when they are subjected to high pressure and temperature. Individual minerals align themselves perpendicular to the stress field such that their long axes are in the direction of these planes - see below.

The EARTHCACHE:

At the coordinates location you will see foliated rocks. to validate the found, please answer the following questions:

  1. What is the orientation of the foliation?
  2. Given the lesson above, work out the direction of pressure that has caused this foliation.
  3. NO SPOILER PICTURES please.Feel free to place scenery pics to your hearts delight as long as they don't give away the answers.

Thanks for visiting!

You can log the cache if you think you have the answers correct. However, don't forget to send me the answers for validation via the messensger service or mail. If you do not hear from me, your answers are correct. If incorrect, I will get in touch with you again.

Thanks

A EARTHCACHE:

Obrigado

aThe most exciting way to learn about the Earth and its processes is to get into the outdoors and experience it first-hand. Visiting an Earthcache is a great outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. An Earthcache is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. Earthcaches include a set of educational notes and the details about where to find the location (latitude and longitude). Visitors to Earthcaches can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth.
