Geocache Description:

18 October 2020, 11:30 - 12:30

Mayfield Fort Historic Site preserves one of the few remaining portions of the Civil War fortifications built to protect the vital rail junction at Manassas, Virginia. Covering 11 acres, the Mayfield Fort site is located on high ground between Buckhall and Russia Branches. Both are tributaries to the Occoquan River and strategic point between them was an ideal place for a Confederate fortification. Sadly this park is a prime dumping spot for some of this area's more trifling citizens giving us plenty of trash to pick up each year.

CITO stands for Cache In Trash Out. It’s the geocacher’s approach to keeping our game board (i.e. the entire planet) in great shape. Geocachers gather together to pick up trash, remove invasive species, repair trails and more! Also all geocachers who participate in a CITO between September 1st to December 31st will earn a pretty sweet new souvenir!

Trash Bags needed for the cleanup will be provided at the starting coords. Let it be known, you WILL get dirty, so dress appropriately, and wear good footwear. The fields could be soggy. The woodline has thorns and some poison ivy. Your garden gloves will come in handy as well.
