A história de Dragon Ball começa com Son Goku, um menino ingénuo e puro com cauda de macaco e uma força extraordinária. Ele mora sozinho, após a morte de seu avô adotivo, numa montanha chamada Paozu. Um dia ele conhece Bulma, uma menina muito inteligente da cidade, que procurava as sete Bolas do Dragão Sagrado. Persuadido, Goku concorda em ajudar Bulma a encontrar as Bolas do Dragão. Os dois partem numa longa jornada, durante a qual fazem muitos amigos. Depois, Goku passa por um treino com o Tartaruga Genial, onde o jovem Krillin se torna seu parceiro, e participa de vários torneios mundiais de artes marciais. Durante o seu crescimento e desenvolvimento, ele enfrenta inúmeros inimigos, incluindo Coraçãozinho de Satan, que depois se torna seu aliado. Quando jovem adulto, Goku casa-se com Kika cumprindo uma promessa feita por ele quando ambos eram crianças, e nasce o seu primeiro filho chamado Son Gohan. Goku descobre que pertence à raça extraterrestre Super Guerreiro, e que foi enviado à Terra quando criança para conquistar o planeta. Pouco depois da sua chegada, no entanto, ele tinha sofrido um ferimento na cabeça, perdendo desta forma a memória da missão e a sua natureza agressiva. No entanto, o jovem decide continuar a defender o seu planeta adotado do ataque de inimigos cada vez mais difíceis, incluindo o príncipe dos Super Guerreiros Vegeta que depois também se torna seu aliado. Thus, together with his family and friends, Goku fights against enemies such as Frezza, Cell, Bubu among others, becoming the protector of the Earth and reaching the state of Super Warrior God.
