Geocache Description:

A roundabout (also called traffic circle, road circle, rotary, rotunda or traffic island) is a type of circular intersection or junction in which road traffic is permitted to flow in one direction around a central island, and priority is typically given to traffic already in the junction. Roundabouts are designed to make intersections safer and more efficient for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Compared to stop signs, traffic signals, and earlier forms of roundabouts, modern roundabouts reduce the likelihood and severity of collisions greatly by reducing traffic speeds and minimizing T-bone and head-on collisions. Under many traffic conditions, a roundabout operates with less delay than other approaches. They allow U-turns within the normal flow of traffic, which often are not possible at other forms of junction.

A main feature of the modern roundabout is a raised central island. Many roundabouts includes a truck apron, a raised section of concrete that acts as an extra lane for large vehicles. The back wheels of the oversize vehicle can ride up on the truck apron so the truck can easily complete the turn, while the raised portion of concrete discourages use by smaller vehicles. The island also provide a refuge for pedestrians. This means pedestrians can choose to cross one direction of traffic at a time and have a safe place to wait before crossing another direction of traffic.
