About SideTracked Caches
This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website
Originally named Stanley, this station was opened in 1878 as part of the Great Northern's Derbyshire Extension, otherwise known as the Friargate Line. It was soon renamed West Hallam for Dale Abbey (it is actually in the parish of Dale Abbey), and was situated adjacent to the Stanley ("Nibby") pit - if you visit in daylight, you can see that a number of the old pit buildings are still standing. The coal mine meant that it had a busy working life, which got even busier in the Second World War as the station also served the neighbouring Ordnance Depot.
West Hallam was one of the few stations along the line which had a pedestrian bridge; this followed an accident in 1884 when two passengers were killed while crossing the tracks at the station.
As with so many other stations, it was closed in 1964. The former station house still stands though, and is now a small garden centre.
You do not need to visit the posted coordinates (indeed, you can't - it's private property) but these are on the original trackbed of the station.
