Geocache Description:

IMPORTANT: The cache is not at the published coordinates. Those are very strictly off limits and you should, under no circumstances, attempt to access Orford Ness by yourself. It is possible to access parts of the Ness on a National Trust visit at some times of the year, but even then you'll not get close to the published coordinates.

The room I took in Orford back in '78 overlooked the Ness. All sorts of things went on back then, things that the modern generation would think were a figment of someone's imagination.

My trusty shortwave radio always went with me. The nostalgia of the static as you turned the dial looking for some obscure eastern European station or something more, err, exotic makes me smile these days. You never quite knew what you'd come across.

Of course, I didn't expect that I'd come across a complete mystery. Something that it would take me years of puzzling to decipher. Fortunately I had a cassette in and had already hit record when the recording came through. And I still have that tape after all these years.

The message led me to a hidden box. The box, well, I'll leave that to you.

Click the cassette to listen to my recording.

Image of cassette tape with no clue in the alt text - but well done for looking

You can also click here to listen.

Clicking on the links will open an external website in a new window and play an MP3 audio file. You don't need to download the file: it should just play. You can download it if you chose to. If you do then...

Alert: You are about to download a file that contains further details needed to find this geocache. As the cache owner, I represent that this file is safe to download although it has not been checked by Groundspeak or by the reviewer for possible malicious content. Download this file at your own risk.

A clue:

At first I did not realise what it was I was listening to. Sometimes when you spin the shortwave dial that happens, you come across something so bizarre that it seems unbelievable that there should be any meaning or representation to it. Consequently the whole process of shortwave surfing leads to this sort of thing. In the end I started to get the message. It gradually took shape and the meaning became clearer and clearer until it hit me in the face.

The cache:

You need to solve the puzzle(s) to find the coordinates for the final cache. Try and avoid the red herrings...

You can check your coordinates using certitude.

Feedback on the difficulty level of the puzzle would be appreciated. I think there are multiple ways of solving it, but then I know the answer so it's easy for me... Feel free to ask for help.

From a practical point of view, I would suggest parking in Orford and making your way to the cache from there. An Ordnance Survey map might help - there's a map clip in the certitude checker describing a route.

You might be interested in reading more about Numbers Stations. It won't help you solve the mystery I uncovered on my visit, but it might just send you off along the shortwave dial.
