In 1330 the first library on the current territory of Romania was founded in Sibiu.
In 1544 Filip Moldoveanul printed the first book in Romanian - the Lutheran Catechism, or the Catechism of Sibiu.
In 1861 the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People (ASTRA) was founded.
From 1905 to the present, this building (Association Palace) hosted the Astra Library.
In 2007 the B building of the library was built.

În 1330 la Sibiu a fost înfiinţată prima bibliotecă de pe actualul teritoriu al ţării.
În 1544 Filip Moldoveanul a tipărit prima carte în limba româna - Catehismul Luteran, sau Catehismul de la Sibiu - pe cheltuiala oraşului.
În 1861 s-a înfinţat ASociaţiunea TRAnsilvană pentru Literatura Română şi Cultura Poporului Român.
Din 1905 pâna în prezent, această clădire (Palatul Asociaţiunii) găzduieşte Biblioteca Judeţeană ASTRA Sibiu.
În 2007 s-a construit corpul B al bibliotecii.
