The Crosswinds Trails Geocache Series
Shortly after the first of the year the Crosswinds Cache Crew met with the park manager and naturalist to develop plans for 2020 events and geocache series. Shortly after that it became apparent that the COVID-19 pandemic was going to make group meetings and events impossible for most of 2020. One the Crosswinds Cache Crew's objectives is to archive their caches in about a year and launch new caches in new locations to reduce the impact on the area with "Geo-trails" This series is the first for 2020. There is no event associated with this series.
One of the popular features of Crosswinds Marsh is its trails. There are nine named trails. Crosswinds offers seven miles of hiking trails, and 4.5 miles of horseback riding trails
Wetland Garden Trail
One of the liveliest areas at Crosswinds Marsh during the summer is at the pavilion on the Wetland Garden Trail. Have you ever seen a barn swallow chasing down prey? Well here is your best opportunity for seeing that happen! Barn swallows are small birds that eat insects and nest in… you guess it, barns and other structures. They love the pavilion because it provides protection from weather and many predators, and is surrounded by the marsh where they hunt mosquitoes, dragonflies, damselflies, mayflies and other insects that fly over the water’s surface. Watching barn swallows catch their food is quite entertaining as they have some rather acrobatic moves! The young are just as entertaining when they pop their heads out of the nest to call mom and dad when they’re hungry. And just wait until they start learning to fly!
