Historique

L'île de la Barthelasse est la plus grande île fluviale d'Europe, avec une superficie de 9,8 km2.
Elle est située à Avignon, dans le département de Vaucluse, en région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

Elle constitue également Barthelasse-Piot, l'un des 9 quartiers d'Avignon.

L'île est séparée du quartier Centre par le Bras mort du Rhône, et de la ville de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon par le Grand Rhône.

Dans les années 1850, l'île est cédée par la commune de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.

Elle est donc désormais intégrée à la commune d'Avignon et au canton d'Avignon-Ouest.

Née de la soudure progressive d’un chapelet d’îles rhodaniennes, dont l’île Piot, qui forme sa pointe sud et a conservé son nom, l'île de la Barthelasse a une surface d'environ 1000 hectares, dont 600 cultivables, ce qui en fait la plus grande île fluviale d'Europe.

The island of Barthelasse is the largest river island in Europe, with an area of ​​9.8 km2.
It is located in Avignon, in the Vaucluse department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

It also constitutes Barthelasse-Piot, one of the 9 districts of Avignon.

The island is separated from the Center district by the Dead Arm of the Rhône, and from the city of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon by the Grand Rhône.

In the 1850s, the island was ceded by the municipality of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.

It is therefore now integrated into the municipality of Avignon and the canton of Avignon-Ouest.

Born of the gradual welding of a string of Rhone islands, including Piot Island, which forms its southern tip and has retained its name, the island of Barthelasse has an area of ​​approximately 1,000 hectares, of which 600 are cultivable, making it the largest river island in Europe.
