Lors de la contre-offensive allemande de 1918, le village et le bois qui la domine furent le théatre de combats et de bombardements importants. Son Château et son église furent détruits. En 1920, la commune fut décorée de la Croix de Guerre

Belleau is a small commune of 127 inhabitants, located in the department of Aisne. During the German counter-offensive of 1918, the village and the wood which dominates it were the scene of heavy fighting and bombardments. Its castle and its church were destroyed. In 1920, the commune was decorated with the Croix de Guerre (War Cross).
