Bourbon - History

Distilling was most likely brought to present-day Kentucky in the late 18th century by Scots, Scots-Irish, and other settlers (including English, Irish, Welsh, German, and French) who began to farm the area. The exact origin of bourbon is not well documented. There are many conflicting legends and claims, some more credible than others.

Bourbon is a distinctly American product that has been produced in this country since the 18th century and declared by Congress in 1964 to be America’s only native spirit.

Bourbon can be made in any U.S. state but the vast majority of it hails from Kentucky and can claim to be world-renowned Kentucky Bourbon.

As defined by federal standards, Bourbon must be aged in charred new oak barrels at no less than 80 proff and not more than 125 proof. The bourbon must contain not less than 51% corn.

There is no set time for Bourbon to age in a barrel, with the exception that Bourbon must age in a barrel for at least two years within Kentucky to be claimed as “Kentucky Bourbon.”

The BBB GeoTour (GC497)

Gather up the family and friends and plan a road trip to enjoy three old-fashioned Kentucky traditions with a side of geocaching. Barbecue Mutton smoked from wood, not from a sauce, and definitely not from a bottle. Bourbon, world-renowned Kentucky Bourbon, made from a local natural limestone water source then aged in new charred oak barrels for a minimum of two years. Bluegrass Music completes the trio as Owensboro Kentucky is just minutes away from the home place of Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass. We invite you to experience these three traditions through the Barbecue, Bourbon, and BlueGrass GeoTour; set within the award-winning Smothers Park, located on the Scenic Ohio River.
