Olhão tem várias zonas de pinhal mas penso que em nenhuma delas é feita a recolha das pinhas para extrair os pinhões. No entanto em alguns pontos desta cidade é comercializado o pinhão para vários fins.
Pinhão é a designação genérica da semente de várias espécies de pinaceaes e araucariaceaes, plantas gimnospérmicas, isto é, cuja semente não se encerra num fruto. O pinhão se forma dentro de uma pinha, fechada, que com o tempo vai-se abrindo até liberar o pinhão. Nas pináceas, as sementes são dotadas de uma película, como uma espécie de asa, que se descola da pinha madura e possibilita que as sementes sejam espalhadas pelo vento, iniciando-se assim o processo de crescimento de um novo pinheiro.
Portugal tem o melhor pinhão do mundo, mas são poucos os portugueses que comem regularmente o mais caro dos frutos secos. O chamado ouro branco, cujo quilo já atingiu os 120 euros em anos anteriores, é exportado e se volta ao País é misturado com pinhões turcos, chineses e paquistaneses, de pior qualidade.
A colheita das pinhas ainda é manual. Entre 15 de Dezembro e 31 de Março, o prazo legal para a apanha, centenas de homens sobem aos pinheiros mansos por escadas de ferro presas aos troncos e trepam pelos ramos até atingir a copa das árvores, muitas com 18 metros de altura. Aí, com a ajuda de varas com ponteiras ou ganchos, tocam nas pinhas para estas caírem no chão. É um trabalho demorado e perigoso.

The so-called white gold, whose kilo has already reached 120 euros in previous years, is exported and is returned to the country and mixed with worse quality Turkish, Chinese and Pakistani pine nuts.
The harvesting is still manual. Between the 15th of December and the 31st of March, the legal deadline for harvesting, hundreds of men climb the tame pines by iron stairs attached to the trunks and climb the branches until they reach the top of the trees, many 18 meters high. There, with the help of rods with tips or hooks, they touch the pine cones so that they fall to the ground. It is a long and dangerous job.
