Geocache Description:

Church Micro 13180...East Acton - St Aidan

The interior of the church – completed in 1961 – is plain and minimalist, which helps to show up the art that includes paintings, carvings and stained-glass windows.  When picking up the cache, why not go in and have a look?

Some questions for you in preparation both for the cache and for viewing the artwork.

  1. The Stations of the Cross were made by Arthur Fleischmann from Bratislava.  He travelled all over the world including South Africa, Indonesia and Australia.  In the year 194A, he arrived in London where he stayed for over 40 years, having met his wife here.
  2. The current building was erected in 1961 – but St Aidan’s was founded in the year 192B.
  3. The crucifix was a piece by Graham Sutherland.  The piece here at St Aidan’s was his C-th created for a church.
  4. The 19D8 lecture to the Royal Society of British Sculptors, delivered by Ben Read, used St Aidan’s as an example of church art in the post-war period.
  5. Aidan was an Irish monk and came to England to tell the people of Northumbria about Christianity.  He chose the island of Lindisfarne in the year 63E for the site of his monastery.
  6. In the year F75, the monks left Lindisfarne, which was by that time under attack regularly by the Vikings.

The cache is near the church, at N51 30.ABC, W000 14.DEF.  It is a micro cache, placed in the middle of a busy place.  Therefore your best stealth moves as well as steady tweezer deployment may be required.

Optional:  if you wish, and if you get a chance to visit the church itself, include a photo of a piece of artwork that you like in your find logs!
