Have a nice walk in Avignon
History:
Before the current ramparts,
there was a Roman wall and a first medieval rampart
1st century Roman walls:
The first fortifications were built under Roman colonization in the 1st century.
12th and 13th century ramparts:
A notable evolution in the fortifications dates from the 12th century.
They were built around the city to protect it,
a double enclosure with ditches which corresponded to the layout of the Roman enclosure.
During the Albigensian War, the city was besieged and taken by the King of France Louis VIII, who ordered that the majority of the walls be knocked down and that the ditches be filled with the prohibition to rebuild for five years.
Current 14th century ramparts
Between 1234 and 1237, the people of Avignon built a new rampart,
located thirty to forty meters outside the ruins of the previous one.
Its layout is perfectly reflected in that of the streets:
Trois Colombes, Campane, Philonarde, Lices, Henri Fabre, Joseph Vernet and Grande Fusterie.
It was not definitively completed until 1248
Remains of the 12th and 13th century ramparts
At the corner of rue Joseph Vernet and rue Saint-Charles can still be seen a fragment of this medieval rampart.
