Geocache Description:

14 September 2021, 19:00 - 21:00

It has been a few years since I organised a bat walk for Geocachers and I often get asked when the next one is taking place.

This is an informal event for Geocachers to meet up and socialise whilst listening to some of Exeter's bat population. As with all events there will be the opportunity to chat with fellow geocachers, exchange trackables, get help with puzzles and so on.

I have been able to source ten bat detectors from a local charity. These are available for hire for a suggested donation of £3. It is not necessary to hire a detector to attend this event because you will be able to hear other detectors in the background.

Who can attend:
Each and every Geocacher can attend regardless of whether they have found 1 geocache, 100001 geocaches or anywhere in between. Potential new geocachers are especially welcome.

When:
Tuesday 14th September 2021 from 7pm to 9pm. This event is timed to coincide with bat flights hence the fairly late start.

Where:
Between the River Exe and Exeter Ship Canal, see the headline coordinates for more information.

Travel:
Car: There is a pay and display car park on Michael Browning Way. On street parking may also be available on Haven Road. If you choose to drive please consider your impact on the environment.
Bus: Catch a bus to Exeter St Thomas, Fore Street or Cowick Street and there is not more than a 10-minute walk from any of these to the event location.
Train: Exeter St Thomas is not more than 10 minutes away on foot.

What to bring:
This event takes place during the evening so I advise having warm clothing and sensible footwear because the event takes place in a public park. Not all the paths in this area are lit so it may be wise to bring a torch, especially given we will be near a stretch of water. The torch will come in handy if you decide to grab some caches before or after the event.

Approximate times:
1900 Meet at headline coordinates and sign the logbook
1915 Using a bat detector we will listen to the echolocation calls of some of the bat species that inhabit this area
2100 The official end time of the event
2101 I will be departing to a nearby pub. This is not part of the event but everyone is welcome to join me

Like Geocachers bats are sensitive to the weather. If the conditions are wet then it is less likely bats will be flying, if conditions are windy we may need to relocate to a more sheltered spot. Indicate your planned attendance so that you receive announcements in the run up to the event itself.

I hope to see as many of you as possible on the day!
