Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia. It is located mainly in the Himalayas, but also includes parts of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. With an estimated population of 26.4 million, it is 48th largest country by population and 93rd largest country by area. Himal is the mountain region containing snow and situated in the Great Himalayan Range; it makes up the northern part of Nepal. It contains the highest elevations in the world including Mount Everest (elevation 29,029 ft.) (Sagarmāthā in Nepali) on the border with China.
The flag of Nepal is one of only a few non-rectangular ones in the world. The shape represents the Himalayas. The crescent moon symbolizes the calmness and purity of spirit of the people of Nepal, and the sun represents their resolve. These symbols also represent the cold of the Himalayas and the heat of the lowlands. Together, the two symbols are meant to symbolize the longevity of the country.
Nepalese cuisine consists of a wide variety of regional and traditional cuisines. Given the range of diversity in soil type, climate, culture, ethnic groups, and occupations, these cuisines vary substantially from each other, using locally available spices, herbs, vegetables, and fruit. Nepali foodways have been influenced by religion, in particular Hindu and Buddhist cultural choices and traditions. Although overshadowed by the Indian and Tibetan cuisines in the global consciousness, Nepali cuisines possess their own distinctive qualities to distinguish these hybrid cuisines from both their northern and southern neighbors. Nepali cuisines, with generally tomato-based, leaner curries, are lighter than their cream-based Indian counterparts, and Nepali momo dumplings are heavily spiced compared to their northern counterparts.
