Līgums, kas tika noslēgts ar Bella telefona firmu, noteica, ka pirmā telefonu centrāle Rīgā jānodod ekspluatācijā 1882. gada 1. jūlijā. Tās abonentu skaits sākumā bija neliels – 1888. gadā vien 474, gadu vēlāk – 1070. Šis gausums skaidrojams galvenokārt ar ļoti dārgu pieslēgšanas maksu un augsto abonēšanas cenu. Taču Rīgas telefona tīkla izveide sekmēja telefona tīklu un atsevišķu līniju tapšanu citviet Latvijā. Tā 1894. gadā izveidots Siguldas telefona tīkls, divus gadus vēlāk Cesvaines pusē, tālāk nāca Cēsis, Valmiera, Valka, Limbaži un citi Latvijas novadi. To laiku telefoniem bija savdabīga konstrukcija. Mikrofons bija iemontēts aparāta korpusā tā, ka runājot nācās pieliekties, lai tuvinātu muti mikrofonam. Vēlāk telefonizācija attīstījās straujos tempos un pirms otrā pasaules kara Latvijā jau bija 81 000 abonementu. Ja par tālsakariem, tad to pirmsākums Latvijā bija 1883. gadā, kad Rīgas abonenti jau varēja savienoties ar Mīlgrāvi, Bolderāju, Zemitāniem un Šķirotavu. Latvijā pirmos ārzemju sakarus atklāja 1920. gada 1. septembrī starp Liepāju un Klaipēdu.

The contract with the Bell telephone company stipulated that the first telephone line in Riga should be put into operation on July 1, 1882.
