Warnscale Head is a small 18th century mine cottage half-way up a mountain in northern England, maintained as a simple unlocked shelter `for all who love the wild and lonely places’ by the Mountain Bothies Association.
It was built in the 1750s for the slate mine opened by the new landowner James Spedding, and used intermittently until around 1812, after which it lay derelict for over 150 years.
It was reroofed in traditional style in 1985. Following winter storm damage, the roof was repaired in 2006 with the addition of a waterproof lining under the slates.
In 2016 proper benches replaced the previous piles of slates and a stove was installed.
We will meet up at the Bothy for some geochat and our packed lunches whilst we celebrate and appreciate the great outdoors. The bothy is nestled betwix some Wainwrights, a stones throw from Wainwrights beloved Hay stacks. The event will run from 12 noon - 14:00
