Expropriation et démolition pour la construction
La construction du couvent a nécessité une modification du quartier autour de la place de la Pignotte.
Mario Filonardi a obtenu l'expropriation et la démolition des maisons qui gênaient la construction du couvent.
Une construction scénographique
La place de la Pignotte a été conçue comme une via recta romaine pour permettre au spectateur d'avoir le recul nécessaire pour voir toute la façade, de l'extrémité de cette grande place, qui lui sert d’esplanade, de la porte de l’église, et jusqu'au maître-autel.
La place permet la mise en place d'une scénographie pour les cérémonies extraordinaires
Les dates de construction et décorations
La chapelle de la visitation a été construite entre 1631 et 1638.
La première pierre de la chapelle a été posée le 10 avril 1631 par le cardinal Mario Filonardi, archevêque et vice-légat d'Avignon, qui est le protecteur et le commanditaire du couvent.
Le gros œuvre est achevé avant la consécration de la chapelle, le 15 octobre 1638.
Les travaux de décoration de l'église ont continué jusqu'en 1644, avec la pose de la grille du chœur des religieuses.
Au XIXe siècle, les religieuses du couvent ont remplacé les statues qui avaient été confisquées et cachées durant la révolution.
La façade
Comme le rappelle la phrase sculptée sur la façade :
« MARIVS PHILONARDVS-ARCHIEP AVEN ETPLEG FEC »
le cardinal Mario Philonardi est le mécène qui a aidé a fonder l’institution avec un don pour les travaux.
C'est un chef d'œuvre architectural réalisé par De Royers.
La façade comporte deux niveaux, le supérieur est de style corinthien,
et l’inférieur est un peu un mélange de styles.
On l’appelle le style jésuite.
Il y a beaucoup de détails sculptés, formes et visages qui donnent un certain charme et harmonie a l’endroit.
La chapelle a une forme de croix latine.

Aujourd'hui, le bâtiment est privé et appartient à une famille.

The facade

The facade has two levels, the upper one is in Corinthian style,

There are a lot of carved details, shapes and faces which give a certain charm and harmony to the place.
The chapel has the shape of a Latin cross.
