In a new Meridian Township Land Preservation 4 acre site along the bank of the Red Cedar River. Access is by canoe, river right (can put in at Wonch Park or Ferguson Park), or by parking near sign MANDENBERG WOODS on Hamilton Rd which runs NW/SE, and hiking down toward the river. It is quite a hike, starting with a very steep, sometimes unstable bank. Just SSE of the sign I placed an assist rope to semi-rappel down to the flood plain. Also, further NW there is a shallower incline for somewhat easier access for coming back up. This is a wild, natural area, lots of tall trees, many fallen and scrambled, myrtle, deer sign, beaver sign near the river, seasonal alluvial ponds. Knee boots or higher recommended, also a walking stick. The Township acquired this property in 2018 and has left it unimproved, except for a few boundary posts. There is also a tree stand for archery taking of deer by specially-authorized volunteers in autumn/winter; see the notice on a post NW of the sign for applicable dates. The container is waterproof and shatterproof, following all Geocaching and Meridian Township guidelines. Details of the acquisition are on the backside of the log. For history of the name Mandenberg, see another geocache on this site closer to Hamilton Rd.
