Geocache Description:

29 February 2020, 15:30 - 17:30

The date on this event is for the windup, location is still TBD and will be announced prior to the conclusion of the Games.  The Games run from 12:00am Saturday, December 14, 2019 through to 11:59pm Sunday, February 23.  The windup is currently scheduled to be on February 29 at 3:30pm, wrap up by about 5:30pm.  Date, time, and location will also be confirmed prior to the conclusion of the Games - the coordinates are for the Canadian Brewhouse in Hamptons, which is likely where the windup will be.

The Winter Caching Games is a fun competition to get you out of the house during the (normally) chilly days of winter.  Designed for all Saskatchewan cachers, the objective is to complete the Games during the 10 weeks(ish) that the game runs.

Please note that this is not a race.  Tasks have higher or lower points assigned to them, normally due to complexity of the Task.  You are seeking points, not completing the Games first; although there may be danger in waiting too long.  Even if you don’t get one of the high scores, a strategic approach may still result in a prize.

If you are a visitor to Saskatchewan, welcome!  You are welcome to participate, but are still required to complete the full requirements in order to qualify for prizes.

If you are one of the prize winners, I will make every effort to accommodate pickup/delivery; however it is ultimately your responsibility to collect your prize.

The majority of rules are the same as previous years.  The complete set of rules can be found on the attached document (which you are required to follow).  However, there are 3 new ones to keep in mind:

  1. There are 2 ways to completion options for the Games:
    • Junior Achievement: completing any 15 Tasks
    • Senior Achievement: completing any 22 Tasks
  2. Participants may claim up to 2 Tasks using any number of caches found outside of Saskatchewan.  Please state in your Task Claim which caches were found outside Sask.
  3. New caches can be used for Tasks if the 'hiding CO' is not participating in the Games.  If the cache's CO is participating in the Games, their Hides published after the Games start on December 14, 2019 are not allowed to be used for Tasks in the Games, regardless of if they claim it for a Task.
    • Exception: Events are not included in this rule.  If a participant hosts an event during the Games, it can be used for any Task.

There are sometime specific requirements for Tasks; these are always listed within the Task.

For overall rules regarding claiming Tasks, please see Rule 3 in the attached document.

If you have questions about whether a cache is acceptable for a Task, please contact me via Geocaching Messages or email.  I always do my best to be prompt with replies, but I make no guarantee of speediness (depending on time of day and/or work schedule).  Lateral or creative thinking is encouraged for the Games, so I will make every effort to accept sideways logic.

If I require further clarification of any claimed Tasks, I will be contacting you either via the Geocaching Messages or email.  Failure to reply within a reasonable timeframe may result in your Task being removed from the scoreboard.  I will not do this lightly, but it may happen.

If I am unavailable for an extended period of time, I will post an announcement with contact info of whomever will be covering questions during my absence.

1) Bi-weekly Bonuses

  • Bi-weekly Bonuses run from Sunday to Saturday. I will aim to get themposted the Saturday before the bonuses starts.
  • Bi-weekly Bonuses must be claimed by 11:59pm, every other Saturday evening.
  • Bi-weekly Bonuses will be your choice of -3, 0, or +3 points, to help you with your desired strategy in the Games!

Bi-weekly Bonuses will be listed here:

Dec 22-Jan 4

Let's break out the creativity! I'd like to see some wintery "art"; as we know, art is subjective, so it can be anything your hearts desire... but it has to be outside and the medium must contain snow/frost/ice, etc! So make snow angels or snow men, sketch with your steps and take an aerial pic, draw something in your windshield's frost before clearing it, build an igloo... let the creativity flow

Bi-weekly bonus is your choice of +3, 0, or -3 points, which must be stated in your Note. This bonus is available until 11:59pm Saturday January 4, 2020.

2) Monthly Bonuses

  • Monthly Bonuses will be from the 1st to the last day of all 3 months. I will aim to have the Monthly Bonus posted the day before the Bonus starts (December 14, December 31, and January 31).
  • Monthly Bonuses must be claimed prior to 11:59pm on the last day of the month (December 31, January 31, and February 18).
  • Monthly Bonuses will be your choice of -5, 0, or +5 points, to help you with your desired strategy in the Games!

Monthly Bonuses will be listed here:

December’s Monthly Bonus!

December's monthly bonus is to tell me about a recent donation you made - tis the season of giving. This can be material things/items or your time; did you donate to a charity food drive, or does your curling team knit socks for care homes? Do you ring the bell at a charity kettle, or do you volunteer to drive people through the holiday season?

You don't have to be specific if you don't want to, just enough so I can paint the picture myself.

Photos are always accepted, but are not required for this Bonus. Monthly Bonus is your choice of +5, 0, or -5 points, which must be stated in your Note. This Bonus is available until 11:59pm Tuesday, December 31.

Edit: Bonus is available to be claimed until 11:59pm Thursday, January 2, 2020. Happy New Year!

January's Monthly Bonus!

January is all about starting the year off on the right foot.

I would like you to perform one “Random Act of Kindness”. It could be shovelling a neighbour’s driveway, baking cookies for the office, buying the person’s coffee for them at the coffee shop, or anything else you can think of!

Anything that doesn’t count as your job, or a normal occurrence; something you aren’t expecting something in return for. Use your imagination, and tell me about it!

January’s Bonus is available until 11:59pm on Friday, January 31, 2020. It is worth your choice of +5, 0, or -5 points, which should be stated in your log.

Challenges

All Points can be taken as Positive or Negative.

That's right... multiple Challenges!

Challenge A: "Baby It's Cold Outside"
This Challenge only take the Air Temperature into account.

  • You have to claim 2 of the 3 months! You can choose which 2 to claim, and which one to avoid, so make your decision carefully.
    • Only 3 combos to choose from: December & January, December & February, or January & February. You don't have to indicate which combo you are choosing, this is just a reference.
  • You must find a physical cache for each of the 2 Challenge A months.
  • Points will be given based on the average temperature between your 2 Challenge A Claims (based on the list below).
  • Each participating geocaching team (individual or multiplayer team) will only receive points once for Challenge A, and will be calculated after the second Challenge note is submitted.
  • No substitutions/replacements will be allowed once claimed. The first 2 claims for Challenge A will be used in the calculation.

  • This is the WINTER Caching Games after all, so the biggest points go to the heartiest, or craziest, of cachers!
  • Scoring (based on the average Air Temperature of your 2 Challenge A claims):
    • 0C to -9.9C: 1 point
    • -10C to -19.9C: 3 points
    • -20C to -24.9C: 5 points
    • -25C to -28.9C: 7 points
    • -29C to -31.9C: 10 points
    • -32C to -34.9C: 14 points
    • -35C or colder/crazier: 19 points
  • For example: December 31st you find a cache when it's -25C; on January 12th, you find a cache when it's -32C. You average temperature is -28.5C, and would be worth 7 points.

  • Your 2 Challenge A notes must include:
    • GC Code of the physical cache
    • Date the cache was found
    • A screenshot/photo of the temperature (weather app, website, thermometer, etc)
    • A photo of you at the cache (try to at least pretend to look happy with me!)
  • Each month's Claim Note must be claimed within 2 calendar days of logging the find. No going out at -30C on December 20, and waiting until February 15th to claim - that is the calculated risk portion of the Challenge!
    • For example: A Cache found at any time on January 11th must be claimed prior to 11:59pm January 13.
  • One of the Challenge A claims can be completed on the same day as Challenge B, however you must use a different physical cache for each Challenge

Challenge B: "Winter Wonderland"
This Challenge only take the Wind Chill into account.

  • You must find a physical cache for Challenge B
  • Each participating geocaching team (individual or multiplayer team) will only receive points once for Challenge B.
  • No substitutions/replacements will be allowed once claimed.

  • Scoring is based on the difference between Air Temperature and the "Feels Like" Wind Chill of your Challenge B claim. Point values will be the difference, rounded to the full point:
    • Example 1: Air Temperature is -3.6C, Wind Chill feels like -12; would be a difference of 8.4, rounded down to 8 points.
    • Example 2: Air Temperature is -2C, Wind Chill of -9; difference of 7 points. Similarly, Air Temperature of -32C, Wind Chill of -39 would also be worth 7 points.

  • Your Challenge B claim must include:
    • GC Code of the physical cache
    • Date the cache was found
    • Screenshot of the temperature and Wind Chill (weather app, website, etc)
    • A photo of you at the cache (try to at least pretend to look happy with me!)
  • Your Claim Note must be claimed within 2 calendar days of logging the find.
  • Challenge B claims can be completed on the same day as one of Challenge A, however you must use a different physical cache for each Challenge
