Geocache Description:

17 February 2020, 10:00 - 14:00

You have probably seen pictures of the famous Lake Winnipeg Greenbacks, these Walleye (locally called pickerel) attract thousands and thousands of people to our great province every year. Now is your chance to try your hand at catching a couple, during the weekend of February 15 - 17, 2020 across Manitoba people can try fishing without a license! (Excluding federal parks)

On February 17th from 10:00am – 2:00pm, myself and a few other familiar faces from the Winnipeg caching community will be setting up heated pop-up ice fishing shelters on Lake Winnipeg to ice fish for the day. Any cachers who are up for a not-so-traditional caching event that is a little off the beaten path are welcome to join us and enjoy a great Manitoba pastime! Holes will be predrilled and fishing rods and tackle will be on loan for you to use (or bring your own). For those that arrive around noon we will have BBQ’ed jalapeño and cheese goose smokies, Garlic sausage (kubasa) and other snacks to to share, so bring your appetite! Feel free to bring your own snacks to share too! The event is come and go type of event, feel free to show up at any time and stay as long as you like. Most likely we will be out there until Sunset

***IMPORTANT PLEASE READ***

The GPS coordinates I have included for the event are approximate, as you can imagine things will change as Lake Winnipeg freezes up. The day of the event I will "write note" in this event page, listing the exact coordinates and any updates. This decision will be based on ice thickness, fishable water depth, and safety (No jumping ice ridges for us). Originally we wanted to host this event on the Red River to make it more accessible but with unprecedented high water and ice jams from Lockport to the Lake, that isn’t looking possible.

As you know, Manitoba winters can be troublesome, in the event of high winds, blizzard like conditions, extreme cold this event will be cancelled or rescheduled. Again check the event page for any updates. Safety first!

I have included two parking coordinates. One is on a maintained road near Matlock, for those of you that don’t have a truck or SUV with 4x4 or AWD, this is your best choice for parking. The other parking coordinates are on the lake. There is normally a well beaten path to the Lake and a large “parking lot” just after you leave the road. If you have a 4x4 you are welcome to drive right out to the coordinates I post the day of the event. Otherwise we will come out and pick you up at one of the two parking coordinates and ferry you to the tents. No ice is completely safe, but normally by February there is a couple feet of ice, so safe enough to drive on.

Bring cold weather gear, warm jacket, ski pants, hat, gloves etc... Also a fold up chair or bucket to sit on.

Come on out and get a Smilie and hopefully fresh pickerel dinner!
