Geocache Description:

Golf in Portugal

The first golf course appeared in the 1920's in between Portimao and Praia da Rocha, but didnt have greens made of grass, lack of fresh water meant that the 'greens' were made from sand and oil! The first proper golf course opened in 1966 at Penina, just a few kilomatres away from Lagos, and was designed by Sir Henry Cotton, who enjoyed the later years of his life in the area, and could be seen on the course with his caddy, his clubs draped over the back of a donkey!!

Palmares

The original course at Palmares was opened in the mid-1970's, and was an 18 hole course. The new 27 hole course, with little remaining from the original design was opened in 2011, and the designed was Robert Trent-Jones II.

The Cache

This cache is one of a series of caches with a golf theme that will take you to golf courses in the region. It is a camo tube, located near a sandy footpath alongside par 5 13th hole, south of the railway line. There is no need to wander onto the golf course, or over the railway line. Both are dangerous places to wander. Only cross the railway line via the tunnel at N37 07.360, W008 38.209. Bring your own pen, and please replace as found

Happy golfing and geocaching!
