Each cacher must send his/her own answers BEFORE logging a find. Enjoy the journey (learning adventure) as well as the destination (smiley earned). Remember to take only pictures and leave only footprints. To get credit for this Earthcache, complete the following tasks:

1. MESSAGE …. What is the difference of the substrate between the bridge (waypoint) and the arch (posted).

2. MESSAGE …. What is the difference of the lintel between the bridge (waypoint) and the arch (posted).

3. MESSAGE …. Give two additional differences between the bridge (waypoint) and the arch (posted).

4. LOG …. Post a picture of you or your signature item at or near the Arch -and- of you or your signature item at or near the Bridge. These pictures are your log signature.

OPTIONAL - Please respect the time and effort involved in creating this earthcache by adding A and B to your log.

A. JOURNEY OF THE MIND ... Science explains what we observe. Relate (in your own words) something you found interesting in the reading. This adds to your learning adventure and your log.

B. JOURNEY OF THE HEART ... Art shares our personal experience of what we see. Share something special you found on site, and why it is special to you. This is a memorable addition to your log and will make other hearts smile.

NATURAL ARCHES and BRIDGES

A natural bridge is a type of natural arch. To be classified as a bridge, there are two major differences. As you visit the bridge and the arch, observe the difference in both the substrate (underneath your feet) and the lintel (span above your head).

GEOLOGY OF CARTER CAVES RESORT PARK

"Carter Caves State Resort Park lies along the western edge of the Allegheny or Cumberland Plateau (a physiographic province that extends from New York to Alabama). It consists of stream-eroded hills and ridges with narrow valleys. The principal geologic features within the park include caves, sinkholes, natural bridges, waterfalls, box canyons, deep gorges, steep-sided cliffs, and rock houses." The rocks are mainly sandstone and limestone.

FORMATION OF NATURAL BRIDGE

This bridge is one of the landmarks of the area. The opening is 180 ft long, 60 ft wide, and nearly 40 ft high. The thickness of the overhead span averages 15 ft and is thick enough to support the road running over it. This landmark was once an underground cave through which Cave Branch flowed. Water and wind erosion carved out the rock leaving behind this structure.
