Geocache Description:

Cambusbarron Parish Church

Also known as The Bruce Memorial Church.

Cambusbarron is a village in Stirling. There is evidence of settlement at the site since the Bronze and several forts dating from the Iron Age have been found near the village. One such fort is located at Gillies Hill, a large semi-natural ancient woodland area with a range of unusual wildlife, thought to be the site of Robert the Bruce's camp shortly before the Battle of Bannockburn.

There has been a place of worship on this site for many years, and tradition has it, that Robert the Bruce partook of the sacrament on the eve of the Battle of Bannockburn at a site very close to the existing church. It is claimed that the water from the Well below Chapel Croft was used by Robert the Bruce to sprinkle on the field of Bannockburn before the battle.

No structural remains now survive of this chapel, but in 1858 some local inhabitants remembered having seen part of the ruin still standing. It was once suggested that the chapel was founded at the end of the 15th century. Fleming (1902). In excavating for the foundation of dwelling-houses at the spot some years ago a quantity of human bones was unearthed, which pointed to the existence of a burying-ground.

The water from Bruce's Well was also believed to have medicinal properties and used by local folk to help afflicted members of their families - the fine for this transgression was to "mak publick repentance the next Sunday in lining claithis."

The existing church was erected in 1909-1910 to a design by McLuckie & Walker. Art nouveau Gothic in style and constructed in local Polmaise stone.

You will need to gather some answers from the church in order to discover the final co-ordinates - at, in my opinion, one of the best views in Stirling.

Final is at N56 06.ABC W003 58.DEF
