THE GRAVEYARD OF THE PACIFIC AND THE COLUMBIA RIVER BAR

At the mouth of the Columbia River sits the particularly dangerous Columbia Bar. This sandbar is about 3 miles wide and reaches about 6 miles into the ocean. This navigational nightmare has claimed over 2,000 vessels and 700 lives since 1792.

The mouth of the Columbia has a worldwide reputation. US Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment responds to hundreds of calls a year in these dangerous waters. This Coast Guard station is also home to the National Motor Lifeboat School.

The Construction of the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse (1856) and the North Head Lighthouse (1898) reduced the number of shipwrecks that occur at the mouth of the Columbia River. These lighthouses are staffed 24/7 and remain in operation to this day.

THE CACHE

The listed coordinate are your start point to find this hide. From the "pet area" sign, look south. (If the hotel building is on your left, you are looking north). From here, you should see a building with a chimney. Walk towards the chimney. Once you get near the chimney, look to your right. See that covered walkway? walk under it and follow the walk way around. The walkway ends with a "porthole to the south". From this vantage point, you can see the cache hidey spot. However, to access it, you must walk to the driveway and walk south towards the "lonely" lamppost. Just before you get to the "lonely lamppost", on your left you will see some large painted rocks. Focus your search there.

The cache is placed with explicit approval from Kelly the GM of the Chautauqua Lodge who has graciously allowed us to put the cache on their property. Please do not disturb the foilage. You will not find the cache doing that activity.

With this cache being a letterbox hybrid, there is a stamp pad and a stamp in this cache. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THE STAMP AND PAD. These items stay in the cache for the letterboxers to you.

Thank you,

The Management
