Geocache Description:

澳門國父紀念館 / Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial House in Macao / Casa Memorativa Sun Yat Sen

(Cache out of the Memorial House, 24 hours accessible)

-----------------------------

The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Macau at No. 1 Rua de Silva Mendes was original the Macau residence of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen’s family members.

Dr. Sun spent more than four decades pf his life dedicated to overthrowing the Ching Dynasty and establishing a democratic China. During his revolutionary efforts, he came to Macau many time and was the first Chinese to introduce Western medicine in Macau.

Dr. Sun’s elder brother, Sun Mei (孫眉), bought a house on Rua de S. Lourenco for their family, and this house was also served as the residence of Dr. Sun whenever he was in Macau. That house was later demolished.

After the 1911 revolution and the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912. Dr. Sun in 1918 had a small western-style house build at Lung Tin Village (now Rua de Silva Mendes) as his Macau residence.

In 1930 the Macau Government’s dynamite stores at what is now Tracessa de Tunal exploded. Many neighboring house, including Dr Sun’ residence, were destroyed

The Macau Government later compensated Dr Sun’s family for its loss. Mr. Sun Fo (孫科), Dr. Sun’s son, then Civil Administrative Director of Kwangtung Province (Guangdong/Canton), added 90,000 silver dollars to that compensation and build the present mansion.

In the garden of this mansion there is a bronze statue of Dr. Sun, the work of a prominent Japanese sculptor. In addition to this statue in Macau, there are three others in Mainland China.

Dr. Sun’s divorced wife, Madame Lu Mou-ching (元配 盧慕貞夫人) original lived in Tsuey Heng Village (Cuihengcun/翠亨村), the Sun Family ancestral home in nearby Chungshan County (now Zhongshan City/中山市), she later moved to Macau and resided in the mansion until she death on September 7, 1952.

In 1958, this mansion became the present Sun Yat-Sen Memorial House. It was opened to the public as a tourist attraction and as a place where people may pay their respects to the founding father of the Republic of China.

Most rooms here are being maintained as there were in the old days. Dr. Sun’s photographs as well as the furniture and surgical instruments he used are all exhibited here.

A few years ago, a public library was established in this building. Here visitors may read newspapers, magazines and books. Taiwan information is also available. These materials are supplied by the Government of the Republic of China.

The third floor of the hall is now the site of many cultural exhibitions.
