On the morning of September 21, 1777, before the fall of
Philadelphia and the long winter at Valley Forge, 53 Continental
Army soldiers under the command of local general (Mad) Anthony
Wayne were slaughtered by an overwhelming force of bayonet-wielding
British soldiers.
September 21, 2002 marks the 225th anniversary of the Paoli
Massacre, in which the Continental Army, fresh from its defeat at
the Battle of the Brandywine, a "rainout" at the Battle of the
Clouds (on the site of present day Immaculata College), and shortly
before their upcoming draw at the Battle of Germantown, was routed
by British soldiers.

Additional resources:
- Growing up only a few blocks from the memorial site, there was
always a great deal of 'tribal knowledge' about the battle. Wayne
and/or his soldiers were asleep, drunk, etc.
Recently, Malvern Prep teacher Thomas McGuire has published an
incredible book called
'Battle of Paoli' which is available at any major book
retailer. It's simply unbelievably well done, get it, and read it
with two bookmarks, one for the text, and one for the matching
footnotes in the back, which help you visualize the battle's
location and progress in fascinating detail. Highly
recommended!!!

- Visit nearby Waynesborough to
see Anthony Wayne's home and learn more about this legendary
character
- There's a nice multi-page writeup HERE that's
worth a read too...
