PR5 Vereda das Funduras

Este trilho inicia-se junto ao miradouro da Portela, onde temos uma vista magnífica sobre as freguesias do Porto da Cruz e do Faial, dominadas pela massa rochosa da Penha d`Águia.
A caminhada segue pela estrada florestal da serra das Funduras, só depois entra na vereda, pelo interior da floresta Laurissilva. Mais tarde, encontra a Casa das Funduras, que dá apoio às atividades florestais.
Aí poderá optar por deslocar-se ao miradouro do Larano onde terá uma bonita vista sobre a baía da cidade de Machico.
O trilho termina no núcleo populacional dos Maroços, atravessando os tradicionais poios em socalcos, que caracterizam a paisagem agrícola madeirense.
A floresta natural da Ilha da Madeira - floresta Laurissilva encontra-se predominantemente na vertente norte da ilha. Adaptada à presença de uma humidade atmosférica superior a 85%, distribui-se entre os 400 e os 1300m de altitude.Como árvores dominantes, esta floresta indígena apresenta os 4 elementos da família das Lauráceas: o Loureiro, o Til, o Vinhático, e menos frequentemente, o Barbusano. A estes associam-se outras árvores, com especial destaque para o Folhado, o Azevinho, o Pau Branco, os Mocanos, e o Sanguinho. Esta floresta natural é muito importante para o equilíbrio ecológico insular, sendo o principal suporte da fauna e flora endémicas.
Presentemente ocupa uma superfície superior a 15 000 hectares, sendo conhecida internacionalmente como a floresta Laurissilva que se encontra em melhor estado de conservação, tendo recebido o galardão de Património Mundial Natural.
É nesta serra que se encontra a melhor área de floresta Laurissilva da vertente sul da ilha da Madeira, estando incluída na rede europeia de sítios de importância comunitária - Rede Natura 2000.
Esta peculiar floresta assume grande importância como 'produtora de água', atendendo ao seu efeito de retenção da água dos nevoeiros (precipitação oculta). O fenómeno é bem visível neste local, onde é frequente a mudança repentina das condições atmosféricas ao longo do dia. As massas de ar vindas de Norte, carregadas de vapor de água, são obrigadas a subir a vertente Norte da serra, formando nevoeiros quando descem a encosta sul. Esta floresta é essencial para a manutenção das nascentes do Concelho de Machico.

derá observar o campo de golfe do Santo da Serra.
Na linha do horizonte, vislumbram-se as ilhas Selvagens, na terra identifica-se o perfil dos picos mais altos da ilha (Pico Ruivo).
A cache encontra-se nas traseiras da casa num spot com vista para as serras da Portela.

PR5 Path of Funduras 
This trail begins next to the Portela viewpoint, where we have a magnificent view of the parishes of Porto da Cruz and Faial, dominated by the rocky mass of Penha d`Águia.
The walk follows the forest road of the Serra das Funduras, and only then enters the path through the Laurissilva forest.
Later, you will find the Casa das Funduras, which supports forest activities. From there you can choose to go to the Larano viewpoint where you will have a beautiful view over the bay of Machico.
The trail ends at the population center of Maroços, crossing the traditional terraced fields that characterize the Madeiran agricultural landscape.
The natural forest of Madeira Island - Laurissilva forest lies predominantly on the northern slope of the island.
Adapted to the presence of an atmospheric humidity above 85%, it is distributed between 400 and 1300m of altitude. As dominant trees, this indigenous forest presents the 4 elements of the Lauraceae family: the Loureiro, the Til, the Vinhático, and less often, the Barbusan.
These are associated with other trees, with special emphasis on the Leaf, Holly, Pau Branco, Mocanos, and Sanguinho.
This natural forest is very important for the island ecological balance, being the main support of endemic fauna and flora. It currently occupies an area of over 15 000 hectares and is known internationally as the Laurissilva forest which is in the best state of conservation, having received the World Natural Heritage Award.
This is where the best Laurissilva forest area on the southern slope of Madeira is located, being included in the European network of sites of Community importance - Rede Natura 2000.
This peculiar forest assumes great importance as a 'water producer', given its effect on water retention of fog (hidden precipitation). The phenomenon is very visible in this place, where the sudden change of atmospheric conditions is frequent throughout the day. The air-laden air masses from the north are forced to climb the northern slope of the mountain, forming fog as they descend the southern slope.
This forest is essential for the maintenance of the springs of the municipality of Machico. On the other side of the valley you can see the Santo da Serra golf course.
On the horizon, you can see the Selvagens islands, on the earth you can identify the profile of the highest peaks of the island (Pico Ruivo).
