As Furnas, local paradisíaco, é passagem obrigatória numa visita turística pela ilha de S. Miguel, Açores. A sua beleza encanta e deslumbra o viajante que não terá dificuldade em perder-se na contemplação da exuberante vegetação ou das águas calmas da lagoa.
O viajante menos precavido ficará impressionado com os fumos a libertarem-se da terra e não resistirá a provar o famoso cozido das Furnas ou a caldeirada de bacalhau cozinhados em buracos feitos no chão e utilizando apenas o calor da terra.
Se a paisagem e os encantos invadem os olhos e cativam a alma, os cheiros que se desprendem dos caminhos, da vegetação da terra não constituirão surpresa menor. Muitos são agradáveis, mas há pelo menos um deles que faz miúdos e graúdos taparem o nariz e esconderem esgares desagradáveis. Este cheiro tão característico das zonas com fumarolas (vulcânicas) deve-se ao enxofre.
O enxofre ou súlfur é o 16º elemento da Tabela Periódica, símbolo químico S e número atómico 16. Tem uma cor caraterística amarela e á temperatura ambiente encontra-se no estado sólido (os rasgos amarelos de enxofre são visíveis nos caminhos que circundam as fumarolas).
É um não metal insípido e inodoro. O "cheiro de enxofre" vem de seus compostos voláteis, como o sulfeto de hidrogénio. Tem a particularidade de sofrer sublimação, isto é, passar do estado sólido para o estado gasoso sem passar pelo estado líquido.
É um elemento químico essencial para os seres vivos, entra na constituição dos aminoácidos. Tem várias usos, entra na constituição de fertilizantes, medicamentos (laxantes) e de inseticidas.

Unpleasant odors
Furnas, a paradisiacal place, is a must for a tourist visit at S. Miguel’s island, Azores. Its beauty enchants and dazzles the traveler who will not have difficulty getting lost in contemplating the lush vegetation or calm water of the lagoon.
The less cautious traveler will be impressed by the fumes escaping from the earth and will not resist sampling the famous “cozido das Furnas” or “caldeirada de bacalhau” cooked in potholes made in the ground and using only the heat of the earth.
If the landscape and the charms invade the eyes and captivate the soul, the scents that come off the paths, the vegetation of the earth will not be minor surprise. Many are nice, but there are at least one of them that makes kids and big boys cover their noses and hide nasty fingers. This smell so characteristic of areas with fumaroles (volcanic) is due to sulfur.
Sulfur is the 16th element of the Periodic Table, chemical symbol S and atomic number 16. It has a yellow color and at room temperature it is in the solid state (the yellow sulfur tears are visible in the pathways surrounding the fumaroles) .
It is a non-tasteless and odorless metal. The "smell of sulfur" comes from its volatile compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide. It has the peculiarity of undergoing sublimation, that is, going from the solid state to the gaseous state without passing through the liquid state.
It is an essential chemical element for living beings, enters the constitution of amino acids. It has several uses, it enters the constitution of fertilizers, medicines and of insecticides.
