Bonaire has a total of eight lighthouses, of which seven are still functioning today. This geocache is located at the southernmost lighthouse of Bonaire, called "Willemstoren". This 21 meter high building was the first lighthouse of Bonaire. It was erected in 1838 and named after the Dutch king "Koning Willem 1". The first light was ignited on August 24th, in honor of the king's birthday. The guard house nearby has been deserted for a long time. These days the lighthouse works fully automatic and the searchlight is powered by solar energy.
In 2012 the Willemstoren received a well needed restoration and was officially appointed a monument.
Looking land inwards, you can see the extensive network of salt pans. If you continue the road on the west coast you'll find the heaps of salt still being extracted these days. Going east you will find the beauty of the rough east coast and the pristine Lac Bay with its mangroves and windsurfing folks.
Note: when you are travelling the south end of Bonaire you will be exposed to a lot of sun. Make sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen!
