Karstulan taistelu ja Fieandtin kivet
Otto von Fieandt oli tunnettu hieman omalaatuisena piippua polttelevana ja rahvaanomaisesti pukeutuvana johtajana. Fieandt komensi Ruotsin ja Venäjän välillä käydyssä Suomen sodassa Ruotsin sotavoimiin kuuluvan Suomen armeijan osana toimivaa sekalaista 1600 miehen osastoa.
Voittoisan 14.7.1808 käydyn Lapuan taistelun jälkeen käsky kävi Fieandtille siirtyä Lintulahdelta joukkoineen kohti Saarijärveä ja karkoittaa sieltä kreivi Vlastovin johtamat venäläisjoukot ja näin turvata strategisesti tärkeää Vaasa-Kuopio -tietä.
Ennen Saarijärvelle saapumista kävi kuitenkin ilmi, että huomattavan miehistölisäyksen saanut Vlastov oli jo koukkaamassa ja saartamassa suomalaiset. Ainoaksi vaihtoehdoksi jäi vetäytyä ja linnottautua puolustusasemiin Karstulaan Enojoen rannalle, vaikkei asema mitenkään erityisen edullinen puolustajille ollutkaan.
Karstulan taistelu käynnistyi aamulla kello viisi 21.8.1808 ja suomalaisilla oli vastassaan miesvahvuudeltaan kaksinkertainen 3200 miehen venäläisten ylivoima. Taistelu ei ylivoimasta ja vaikeista puolustusasemista johtuen sujunut hyvin, jouduttiin perääntymään ja lopuksi suorastaan pakenemaan ylivoimaista vihollista. 900 miehen kaatumisen vaatineesta Karstulan taistelusta tuli Suomen sodan käännekohta sen avatessa venäläisjoukoille tien Lapualle.
Taistelun ja sotajoukkojen johtaja Fieandtille on pystyetty Enojoen rannalle muistomerkki, jonka laatassa hän edelleen rauhallisesti polttelee hänelle tärkeää piippuaan. Tarinan mukaan Fieandt suojautui juuri näiden kivien taakse vihollisen hyökätessä.

The Battle of Karstula (Karstulan taistelu) and von Fieandt's boulders
Otto von Fieandt was known to be a somewhat peculilar military leader with his pipe and ordinary peasant like clothing. Fieandt had a group of 1600 men in his command. The group was a part of the Finnish army, which was part of the Swedish army in the Finnish War fought between the Kingdom of Sweden and the Russian Empire from 1808 to 1809.
After the victorious Battle of Lapua in July 14th 1808 Fieandt and his troops were ordered to move from Lintulahti towards Saarijärvi. The goal was to drive the Russian troops led by Count Vlastov away from Saarijärvi and secure the strategically important Vaasa-Kuopio road.
Before arraving to Saarijärvi Fieandt found out the Russians had got a significant addition of troops and they were already flanking the Finnish forces. The only alternative was to fall back to Karstula and take defensive positions there on the banks of the river Enojoki eventhough the position was nothing but favourable.
The Battle of Karstula started 5 o'clock at dawn in August 21st 1808. The Finnish forces had against them twice as big Russian forces with 3200 men. The fighting didn't go well for the Finnish forces because of the superior numbers of the enemy and the unfavorable terrain and this led them to fall back and finally flee from the Russians. The Battle of Karstula took lives of 900 Finnish men and it became a pivotal moment in the Finnish war because it opened the road to Lapua for the Russian forces.
Next to the river Enojoki a memorial monument was erected for the battle and von Fieandt. There you cas see a commemorian plaque, where Fieandt still piecefully smokes the pipe always so important to him. According to the local story Fieandt seeked shelter behind these very boulders when the enemy attacked.
Targets and tasks
To log this virtual cache as found you must
1) Take a photo where the commemorative plaque in the photo above can be seen.
2) You have to place something personal of your choosing in the photo like you name tag, GPS or maybe yourself.
3) Please attach the photo your cache log. DO NOT send it to the cache owner.
4) The logs without a photo will be deleted.
