Geocache Description:

Most every caching icon is already available in this location, so here's one more.
The hidden date is also significant, as August 19th is National Aviation Day!

Convair SM-65 Atlas

The Convair Division of General Dynamics produced three different models of the Atlas ICBM destined for deployment with the Strategic Air Command. The first operational version of the Atlas, the “D” model, was a one & one-half stage, liquid-fueled, rocket-powered (360,000 pounds of thrust) ICBM equipped with radio-inertial guidance & a nuclear warhead. It was stored horizontally on a “soft” above-ground launcher, unprotected from the effects of nuclear blast, & had an effective range of approximately 6,500 nautical miles. The second Atlas ICBM configuration possessed all-inertial guidance, improved engines, a larger warhead, & was stored in a horizontal position in a “semi-hard” coffin-type launcher. The Atlas F missiles also were deployed in “hard” silo-lift launchers which stored the missiles vertically in underground, blast-protected silos.

There is no cost to visit this virtual. It is an outdoor display for the nearby air & space museum. Maybe you'll arrive at the same time the ISS passes overhead. If so, share that in your log (there is an ISS tracker out on the web somewhere, or just look for a fast-moving white light in the sky). This seems the perfect place to sky & space watch.

To log this virtual there are 2 requirements:

1) Find Atlas, look very closely inside the area where the blue launch supports attach & email/message me the words etched into the shiny metal. Binoculars might help.

DO NOT write the answers in your log.

2) In your log on this cache page (NOT via geocaching message center or email), post a photo of yourself
OR a part of you (a shoe, thumbs up, ear, etc.),
OR your GPS,
OR your avatar,
OR your caching name written on a piece of paper at the location.
The Atlas rocket must be visible in the background somewhere, being careful to obscure the answer to question 1.

Obviously, your face is not required in the photo, but something & the Atlas rocket is required. There must be something in your picture(s)that clearly represents EACH cacher logging this virtual, so be sure to get a photo meeting the requirements for each individual cacher's log.

Thanks to J&LA for helping put together this virtual.😘
I'm publishing this cache on LA's birthday in lieu of her annual air show.
