Gradski toranj, jedan od simbola Rijeke, izvorno je predstavljao tipičnu prohodnu kulu kroz koju se ulazilo u utvrđeni grad. On i danas uspijeva dominirati središnjim dijelom Korza, iako su ga s vremenom nadvisile mnoge kasnije zgrade.
Građen je u srednjem vijeku, vjerojatno na temeljima kasnoantičkih, primorskih gradskih vrata. Na donjem dijelu pročelja tornja danas je uočljivo nekoliko njegovih baroknih faza, koje odlikuje bogata arhitektonska plastika portala, u kamenu isklesanoga carskoga grba i reljefa austrijskih careva Leopolda i Karla VI. Rijeka ih je posebno slavila zbog pomorske orijentacije koju su uveli u državnu politiku austrijskoga dvora. Nadgrađe tornja, na kojem se još od XVII. stoljeća nalazi gradska ura, više je puta preoblikovano, znatnije na prijelazu XVIII. u XIX. stoljeće pod vodstvom gradskog inženjera A. Gnamba, a posljednji put koncem XIX. stoljeća prema projektu F. Bazariga.

City Tower, a symbol of Rijeka and a good example of a typical round tower access-point, which lead into the fortified town. Today it dominates the central part of Korzo, although during its lifetime it was overtopped by more recently constructed buildings.
It was built in the Middle Ages, probably on the foundations of the Late Antique littoral town gates. Some baroque phases of its construction can be seen on the lower part of the front of the Tower, which are characterised by a richly decorated portal, an imperial coat of arms carved out of stone and a relief of the Austrian emperors Leopold and Charles VI. Rijeka paid them special respect due to the maritime orientation they introduced into the state policies of the Austrian court. The Tower’s superstructure, on which a city clock has been situated since the 17th century, has been remodelled several times; most significantly at the turn of the 18th century under the guidance of municipal engineer A. Gnamb, the last time was at the end of the 19th century, based on a design by F. Bazarig.

La Torre civica è uno dei simboli di Rijeka (Fiume). In origine non era altro che una tipica torre circolare di passaggio attraverso cui si accedeva alla città fortificata. Oggi domina anche la parte centrale del Korzo (Corso), sebbene nel tempo sia stata sovrastata da nuovi edifici.
Fu costruita nel Medioevo, probabilmente sulle fondamenta di altre porte tardoantiche che dal litorale portavano in città. Alcune tracce barocche della sua costruzione sono visibili nella parte bassa della facciata anteriore, caratterizzata da un portale riccamente decorato, uno stemma imperiale scolpito nella pietra e un rilievo raffigurante gli imperatori d’Austria Leopoldo e Carlo VI. Rijeka portò loro particolare rispetto per l’orientamento marinaresco che attribuirono alla politica statale della corte austriaca. La parte superiore della Torre, su cui è situato l'orologio cittadino sin dal XVIII secolo, è stata ridisegnata più volte, in particolare tra il XVIII e il XIX secolo, sotto la guida dell'ingegnere municipale A. Gnamb. L'ultimo intervento risale alla fine del XIX secolo, su progetto di F. Bazarig.

Der Stadtturm, eines der Wahrzeichen von Rijeka, stellte ursprünglich einen typischen Durchgangsturm dar, durch den man in die befestigte Stadt gelangte. Er schafft es auch heute noch, den mittleren Teil der Fußgängerzone (Korzo) zu dominieren, obwohl er mit der Zeit von vielen, späteren Bauten, übertrumpft wurde.
Erbaut wurde er im Mittelalter, höchstwahrscheinlich auf den Fundamenten der spätantiken, städtischen Meerestore. Am unteren Teil der Turmfassade sind heute einige seiner barocken Phasen sichtbar, welche durch die reiche architektonische Plastik des Portals, das in Stein gemeißelte kaiserliche Wappen und das Relief der österreichischen Kaiser Leopold und Karl VI. gekennzeichnet sind. Rijeka hat diese, aufgrund der Meeresorientierung, welche sie in die staatliche Politik des österreichischen Hofes eingebracht haben, besonders gefeiert. Der Oberbau des Turms, auf welchem sich bereits seit dem XVII. Jahrhundert die städtische Uhr befindet, wurde mehrmals umgestaltet, signifikanter am Übergang des XVIII. in das XIX. Jahrhundert unter der Leitung des städtischen Ingenieurs A. Gnamb und letztmalig Ende des XIX. Jahrhunderts anhand des Projekts von F. Bazarig.
