Jest tylko jedno miasto w Polsce, które posiada w centrum 48 hektarową łąkę. Dlatego też krakowskie Błonia, są niewątpliwą atrakcją Krakowa. Do niedawna jeszcze można było tutaj spotkać pasące się krowy i konie. Dzisiaj jest to ulubione miejsce spacerów krakowian i teren wielu imprez masowych takich jak: święto latawca, zawody balonowe, pogoń za lisem w dzień Św. Huberta, koncerty, amatorskie zawody w piłce nożnej, można też zobaczyć psy trenujące ze swoimi opiekunami, uczących się studentów i grupy harcerzy.
48 hektarowy teren w środku miasta to też łakomy kąsek dla inwestorów, dlatego przed wiekami toczył się gorący spór o jego użytkowanie. W XIV wieku gmina krakowska spierała się o prawa własności z klasztorem pp. Norbertanek Zwierzynieckich, by w 1366 roku stać się prawowitym właścicielem terenu. Początkowo Błonia służyły głównie do wypasu bydła.
Dopiero na przełomie XIX i XX wieku zaczęto te tereny wykorzystywać również w innych celach. To właśnie, na krakowskich Błoniach, w 1894 r. miał miejsce pierwszy w historii miasta start samolotu. Na Błoniach odbywały się uroczystości z okazji 500-lecia bitwy pod Grunwaldem (1910), przysięga legionistów (1914), uroczystości związane z 250. rocznicą odsieczy wiedeńskiej uświetnione paradą kawalerii (1933).
Możliwości płynące z posiadania tak rozległych terenów władze miasta dostrzegają i współcześnie. Czterokrotnie tłumy wiernych witały tu papieża Jana Pawła II.
Organizowane na Błoniach festyny i imprezy okolicznościowe pozwalają mieć nadzieję, że długo jeszcze ta piękna połać zieleni opierać się będzie próbom zamienienia jej w teren budowlany. Pewności jednak nie ma i dlatego warto w pogodny dzień wybrać się na spacer po Błoniach.

There is only one city in Poland that has a 48-hectare meadow in the center. Therefore, Krakow's Błonia Park is an undoubted attraction of Krakow. Until recently, you could still find grazing cows and horses here. Today it is a favorite place for walks of Cracovians and the site of many mass events such as: the kite festival, balloon competitions, chasing a fox on St. Hubert, concerts, amateur football competitions, you can also see dogs training with their guardians, students studying and groups of scouts.
A 48-hectare area in the center of the city is undoubtedly a tasty morsel for investors, which is why centuries ago there was a heated dispute over its use. In the 14th century, the Kraków community argued over property rights with the monastery of The Norbertine Sisters of Zwierzyniec, to become the rightful owner of the land in 1366. Initially, Błonia was mainly used for grazing cattle.
It was not until the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that these areas began to be used for other purposes. It was in Krakow's Błonia in 1894 that the first plane take-off in the history of the city took place. In Błonia, celebrations were held on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald (1910), the legionnaires' oath (1914), and the 250th anniversary of the Relief of Vienna, celebrated with a cavalry parade (1933).
The city authorities have noticed the possibilities resulting from the possession of such vast areas today. Four times crowds of believers welcomed Pope John Paul II here.
Festivals and special events organized in Błonia give hope that for a long time this beautiful area of greenery will resist any attempts to turn it into a building site. However, there is no certainty and therefore it is worth going for a walk in Błonia on a clear day.
